FISHING REPORT AS OF JULY 19, 2017

FISHING REPORT AS OF JULY 19TH

"Since we are in the pup days vs. the dog days of August, anglers need to get on the water early or else fish just before dusk to take advantage of the coolest water and low-light conditions, says Capt. Dave Lear of Tallahassee. By 10 a.m., the bite is usually over, no matter what the tides are doing. The fish are still in the shallows, but they sure don't want to eat much after it gets boiling hot.

The water clarity is yet another factor due to the daily monsoon rains. Just when the water starts clearing up from tannin-stained tea, another thunder-boomer dumps more rain and the run-off eventually works south. Creeks tied to the water-control levees in the refuge are more prone to murkiness than are those with less downstream flow.

Nice-sized trout and redfish continue to lurk in the shallow depths. Look for rock grass and creek channels to find spots that are slightly cooler or shady. That’s where you’ll find the game fish. Topwater plugs like Rapala Skitter Walks, Bagley Jumping Mullet and Heddon Super Spooks are all producing early or late. Floating grass can be an issue with treble hooks, however.

If you do stick it out past mid-morning, switch to suspending lures or jigs to get down in the water column. DOA shrimp, Sureketch jigs or Rapala X-Rap lures are good choices. The Unfair Lures Rip-n-Slash is another proven fish-catcher. Color doesn’t matter quite as much as action, but the fish do need to see the lure to eat it. So if the water is cloudy or stained, glow, pearl and chartreuse all stand out. Pink is a good color also.

The weather-guessers have promised smaller chances of thunderstorms this weekend, but popcorn showers are always possible in the summer months. With the new moon tides will be strong, from the early morning lows to flood by mid-afternoon. The corresponding solunar feeding periods will be from the moonset at 8 until 9 a.m. and then again from lunch until the cresting high. Winds are expected to be typical from 5 to 15 knots from the southwest.

The scallops that are being gathered in the bay are coming from deeper water. Start at the Refuge buoy line with the search. And remember to always fly your dive flag and stay relatively close to your boat.
